Day 5 - Dundee

The Tourists had the morning off in Dundee to relax and catch up on some much needed sleep.

Some of the Tourists ventured out to explore the city of Dundee.

While the Tourists rested, Tour Courier Bill Arnot gathered our on-ice jackets to have a local tailor attach a patch made in honor  of Charlie Brown, our Tourist who sadly died a few months before the Tour.

The Tourists departed for the Dundee Ice Arena at 11:30 am.

Upon arrival at the Dundee Ice Arena, we were welcomed by the Dundee High School Pipe Band which happens to be the World Champion Pipe Band in their age group.  This welcome was definitely a highlight of the trip so far and more than a couple of the Tourists had a tear in their eye during this welcom.

We were then treated to a tasty lunch of soup and sandwiches and welcomed by the President of the Dundee District Curling Province.

Dundee is an arena facility where they curl on just Mondays and Tuesdays and the remaining days the rinks are used for skating.  Ice can be a bit challenging in an arena setting, especially for those that don’t have arena ice experience.  Ironically, Team Jackson which likely has the most arena experience on the USA side had the bye today.

It took the Tourists a while to learn the intricacies of arena ice, some longer than others (as evidenced by the scoreboard).  Dundee brought a strong team of young juniors (Team Skea) that impressed the Tourists greatly.

After the games, we had a short get-together at the Dundee Ice Arena and then headed back to the hotel to prepare for the dinner reception.

The Tourists were treated to a lovely formal dinner reception at the Apex Hotel where we once again regaled the other guests with our version of “entertainment”.  We must be getting better at it because we got a partial standing ovation tonight. We were so good that Mark Cessford of the Dun Curling Club stepped up and sang “The Road to Dundee” for the Tourists.

Brian McCartney, former President of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club, swore the Tourists in as honorary citizens of the Kingdom of Scotland and presented each with their new passports.  We were assured that these would work perfectly fine on our passage through passport control as we return to the United States.

Lorraine and Hazel did such an amazing job of organizing the event. It was truly an event to remember and something we will truly cherish. Thank you so much Lorraine and Hazel!

The Tourists then headed to bed to get some much needed rest before their trip to Elgin in the morning. Well, there may have been a few more drams of whisky before they headed to bed.
